Revival of the Roman Empire (posted 5-29-03)

Quietly, the European Union is growing into the same geographic
area as the ancient Roman Empire. In 1948 several European trade unions united
across national borders. Others did likewise in 1951. In 1957, the Treaty
of Rome put many of these European trade unions in several European countries
together calling this new entity the Common Market. Jean Monnett,
a Frenchman, is credited with popularizing the modern vision of a United Europe.
In 1967 this growing European government was named the European Community.
In 1991, the Maastricht Treaty was ratified by 12 European countries, officially
launching the European Union in 1992. In 1995 three more countries joined
bringing the total to 15 countries, mostly from Western Europe. Since 1995
the EU has remained at fifteen countries, primarily from Western Europe. These
countries have a total population of more than 377 million people.
On April 16, 2003, the EU approved admitting ten more countries, primarily from Eastern Europe. While these countries have already voted to join the EU, there are required changes in their trade laws, currency, etc., delaying their full affiliation until May 1, 2004. On that date, the new total population of this new super power will be more than 452 million people. This compares with United States population of approximately 290 million. Many other Eastern European countries are in process toward admission to the EU, including Romania, Turkey, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia and Serbia-Montenegro. While the European Union lacks the military power and the administrative efficiency of the United States, some think they have already surpassed the U.S. in economic power. The euro is beginning to replace the dollar as the standard in international currency. Clear steps are being taken to build a strong EU military. The EU announced last week they plan to send a peacekeeping force to central Africa. For more on this: http://www.cer.org.uk/pdf/policybrief_enlargement_economy.pdf.
So what is the significance of all this in Bible prophecy? The Roman Empire ruled the world at the time of Christ and for the first millennium. During the second millennium it faded but never completely disappeared. I believe the Bible predicts the re-emergence of the Roman Empire as the primary world power in the last days. The prophet Daniel, in both Daniel 2 and 7, presents a preview of four great world powers, the fourth of which is Rome. In the first vision there is an image of a giant. His two legs and feet represent Rome. These two legs represent the Eastern and Western parts of Rome, in the third century when the capital was moved from Rome to Byzantium. It is interesting that some of the ten countries now being admitted to the EU are from what was then known as the Eastern part of the Roman Empire. Last week the Foreign Minister of Israel proposed that Israel apply for entrance into the EU.
What about the ten toes of the giant image? They represent ten rulers in the end times that appoint a new ruler of a one-world government (Daniel 2:42-44). In the second vision there are four beasts, the last of which has ten horns, which also refer to the ten rulers in the end times (Daniel 7:19-27. This fourth beast of Daniel 7 reappears in Revelation 13 as the world ruler during the last days. Again, he is described as having ten horns (3:1). Revelation 17:12-14 says the ten horns are ten kings who will give their power to one man who will rule the whole world. A few verses later Rome is identified as that world ruling power (Revelation 17:18). The EU government offices are now conducted in Brussels, Belgium; Strasbourg, France; and Rome, Italy. It is not clear at this time, which is the true capital. The EU rotating presidency is in Rome for the next six months, and many decisions for the EU are being made there. So it seems clear that the European Union is moving rapidly toward geographic restoration of the Roman Empire.
But what about the ten kings? Some think that the European Union will choose ten countries to function like the U.N. Security Council, representing the rest the E. U. Some of the ten may be permanent members and some may be rotating. Others say that the whole world will be divided into ten regions. This was first proposed in the Club of Rome, which began in 1972 as a think tank on globalization. Great political leaders and political scientists from many countries, including the United States, have been members of this club. The current president of the Club of Rome is Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan, who is highly regarded by President Bush. Hassan is a nominal Muslim but is clearly a globalist. He is very articulate and makes speeches all over the world. Also, he favors uniting all religions of the world on the basis of ethics rather than Deity. Watch him. He is clearly moving toward the top. Back to the ten regions, LaHaye and Jenkins, in their LEFT BEHIND series, also take the ten region approach for the final world empire.
I believe the Bible teaches that the European Union will increase and become the basis for a one-world government. This week the EU is working on a revised constitution, increasing administrative power, economic power and military power. They are already admitting countries not in geographic Europe. Cypress is one of the ten countries admitted into the EU last month and Turkey is near admission. Watch for some kind of name change for the EU, broadening their identity to include countries clearly from other continents. This is a one-world government in the making. However, this one world government will not be fully implemented until Jesus takes His church out of the world. Paul says, For the mystery of iniquity doth already work; only he who now hindereth [the church indwelt by the Holy Spirit] will continue to hinder until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that wicked one [the AntiChrist] be revealed (2 Thessalonians 2:7-8).
I know of no prophecy yet to be fulfilled prior to the coming of our Lord Jesus. Everything is ready in the Middle East, and in Europe. The question is whether we are ready. Watch the news. Read your Bible, and listen for the trumpet. It could be today! Our Lord Jesus will appear in the clouds to call His bride of true Christians to be with Him (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
Are you ready? You can be. As many as received Him [Jesus], to them gave He power to become the children of God, even to them who believe on His name (John 1:12). Have you received Him in a definite personal way? If not, do it today. Or you may be saved but out of His will and would be ashamed at His coming. There is hope. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). If you are ready, wonderful! Now, do all you can to share the gospel with others and take as many with you as possible. Amen!
